About Tanglewood Press

About Us
Tanglewood Press was founded by Peggy Tierney in 2003, just after her move to the Midwest. Peggy has been a children's book editor and publisher in the UK and in the US since 1995. She has a degree in comparative literature from the American University of Paris, has lived to read since she first learned her alphabet, and has a teenage son who is constantly inspiring her to find good books for reluctant readers.

Tanglewood also has the help of a network of wonderful publishing professionals, who, along with the Tanglewood group of talented authors and illustrators, are generally responsible for most of the good things that have come out of the company since its beginning.

Peggy is also immensely grateful to Audrey Penn, who not only allowed Peggy the privilege of publishing her Blackbeard novels and The Kissing Hand and Chester Raccoon sequels, but who came up with the idea of creating a company in the first place. Without her, Tanglewood quite literally would not exist.

Submission Guidelines
Due to a combination of the overwhelming number of manuscripts received, the growth of Tanglewood over the last two years, and the resulting two-year backlog of manuscripts to be read, we are not currently accepting manuscripts at this time. We will try to post updates on our progress as progress occurs.

If you are waiting to submit your manuscript, please think about sharpening it up. Competition is fierce, and you need to submit your manuscript in the best possible shape. There is a lot of very useful advice on this webpage: www.underdown.org/slush.htm. Please pay SPECIAL ATTENTION to his section on Types of Manuscripts. I couldn't have written it better myself.

If you do think you have a great/unique idea, you might also want to consider having your manuscript reviewed by a professional. Here is a link to a compilation of some of those professionals, from the website of a wonderful children's book author, Cynthia Leitich Smith. Cynthia's website is a virtual treasure trove for budding writers. You'll find plenty of other material and resources to look into.

Currently, we are reading manuscripts from February and March, 2006. We read manuscripts chronologically in the order in which they were received. Please do not send status inquiries. Please do not phone. Please DO submit your manuscripts elsewhere while you wait to hear from Tanglewood. We will try to update this page as we make progress.
